Long Lost Friend
I first met Ian Jackson in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the early 1980s during my most competitive years as a runner. BreathPlay and Ian caught my attention as very intriguing and a way to improved performance. Little did I realize the impact and lifelong benefits I would receive from my work with Ian.
I had never met anyone quite like Ian. He was the first man I ever met brave enough to wear a bodysuit of Lycra (many years before it was 'normal') ! I liked that. He was obviously someone on the cutting edge: a talented athlete himself and not afraid of what people think--only striving to share his BreathPlay work with others.
Although I didn't totally understand it at first, I knew it was something I needed. I soon became an avid student of BreathPlay. Little did I realize that Ian Jackson would be my mentor for many years. During those years, I saw Ian help many people: athletes of varying abilities (from world class to everyday fitness enthusiasts), children and seniors--all gaining insights to their own best performances. He initially coached me in running.
BreathPlay "clicked" for me on the bike, however...and I slowly, but surely developed it more fully each year. Our most intense work together came in 1986 during training for my first Hawaii Ironman triathlon competition. For more than 6 months, he coached and guided me in swimming, biking and running.
I had gone from competitive marathon runner to short-course triathlons...now aiming for the "big one." BreathPlay became the common denominator and focal point of all three sports. Not only did Ian prepare me for the physical requirements of this ultra endurance sport, but also trained me specifically for the mental aspects.
I soon realized that the mind-training would be far more challenging than the body-training. Ian taught me to flow. I faced my inner fears and questions during the Ironman training process. As we worked together, it became more and more natural to relax and focus on my breath.
He taught me to view my competitors in a positive light! Integrating stretching and balance in our work, he showed me the energy source within--one that is limitless. He taught me to compete from a loving perspective. The 1986 Ironman was a joyful experience (right up there with childbirth!)...one that gave me insights that I appreciate today--15 years later
I have continued to use our work throughout the years, both personally and professionally--sharing my BreathPlay experiences with the many people I've met in throughout my fitness work. BreathPlay is part of me...I thank you, Ian Jackson--my friend and coach.
